Duo of Central track athletes named top weekly performers

PELLA — A pair of Central College track and field athletes have been named Iowa Conference performers of the week after winning a combined four events at Saturday’s Cornell Invitational in Mount Vernon.

Senior Ashlee Downs (Urbandale/West Des Moines Valley HS) won all three events she competed in and helped account for 30 points as Central was runner-up to host Cornell. The 2015 indoor/outdoor all-conference honoree was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet, 6.75 inches, won the 200-meter dash in 27.20 seconds and was a member of the winning 4×200 relay squad that crossed in 1:47.82.

On the men’s side, junior Logan Mulford (Mount Pleasant) won his only event with a 6-9.75 leap in the high jump in his first competitive action of the season. It’s the sixth-longest distance in the country this season in Division III and just half an inch off his career indoor best. The 2015 indoor all-league honoree boosted the Dutch to their first team title of the year.

Central will host the Dutch Athletics Classic Friday and Saturday in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. Events will begin at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
