Many Christians agonize over their voting choices and this year is particularly difficult with so many candidates running for president. At times, I feel conflict over whether to vote for a candidate who will enhance their economic well-being or who upholds certain values which appear consistent with one’s faith. At times, one can do both.

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has spurred economic development in Iowa by adding 73,000 jobs. About 40 percent of Iowa’s corn is now going toward ethanol, which has boosted the income of corn farmers. Many ag businesses also benefited from the surge in ethanol and would be hurt if ethanol had barriers to the market. This is a clear pocketbook issue for Iowans.

Voting for a pro-ethanol, pro-RFS candidate can also be an expression of one’s faith. Care for God’s creation is an important Biblical teaching. The emissions from fossil fuels pollute the air and leave a dirty residue. Ethanol is clean-burning and reduces greenhouse gases. Clean air also promotes life.

I’m voting for my pocketbook and voting for my faith by supporting a pro-RFS candidate. I encourage all Iowans to do the same. To find out who the pro-RFS candidates are, go to: www.americasrenewablefuture.com.
