Vera Wheeler, 98, of Oskaloosa, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Vera Bass Wheeler, daughter of Homer and Nora (Tyree) Wheeler, was born, August 26, 1917, in Mitchell, Indiana.

Vera was a 1935 graduate of Mitchell High School. On February 29, 1940 she was united in marriage to Claude Wheeler in Mitchell, IN.

Vera enjoyed a 20 year career as a telephone operator and later worked as a buyer for Braham’s Department Store in Mitchell. In 1963 Claude was hired as a General Sales Manager for Pamco and the family moved to Oskaloosa. While in Oskaloosa Vera was a homemaker.

Vera was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. She was a past member of O. E. S. in Indiana and also a Farm Bureau member in Oskaloosa. Vera enjoyed traveling, fellowship with her friends, bird watching and reading.

Vera’s family includes her daughter, Rebecca Wheeler of Des Moines; a grandson, Philip; a grandcat, George; and many friends and neighbors.

In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, in 1987; her son, Stephen Wheeler; a grandson, Andrew; two brothers, Paul and Wayne; and a host of friends.

As was her wish, Vera’s body has been cremated and no services are planned.
Memorials may be made to the Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter, First Presbyterian Church or MHP Hospice Services Serenity House.
