Mahaska County Sheriffs Office Warms Of Scam
On Jan. 8, 2016, the Mahaska County Sheriff’s office investigated a money scam in rural Mahaska County.
The scammers would call and leave a threatening message that they owed extra tax money because their (the victims) accountants had filed incorrectly, and would then direct the victims to send money via pre-paid credit cards.
The scammers would claim to be with the IRS and call from a 202 area code, and would threaten lengthy jail sentences if the victim failed to cooperate.
During this investigation it was determined an elderly Mahaska County resident was scammed out of a substantial amount of money.
If you are the victim of a possible scam, please contact your local law enforcement.
