OSKALOOSA, IA — This January, the George Daily Youth Theatre is looking at a classic adventure story with Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. Camp starts the week of January 11.

“We’re taking the novel and mashing it up with the real life story about the race between Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland, so the script will be a combination of real and fictional events and people,” said Andy McGuire, Education Director at the George Daily Auditorium. “It’s all about traveling and experiencing new things and using our imaginations on a grand scale.”

In this performing-based camp, students will mount an original production. They will work with a script and blocking, as well as creating set pieces. There will be a showcase performance on Friday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. for campers to show off what they’ve learned.

“Allison McGuire is writing the script for this camp,” said Andy. “We like to have a variety of people writing the scripts, including the kids themselves. It gives them a broader experience to work with more material.”

Different age groups will meet at different times throughout the week. On Mondays & Tuesdays, 3rd-5th graders will meet from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. starting on January 11. Kindergarteners through 2nd graders will meet every Wednesday from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. starting on January 13. Campers in 6-8th grade will meet Thursdays & Fridays from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. starting on January 14.

“We do a lot of different things in camp to help hone our theatre skills,” said McGuire. “When we play games or do other activities, they’re really centered around character building and problem solving and paying attention to details.”

“Every camper should wear shoes that enclose the toe and heel, like tennis shoes,” added McGuire. Snacks and a water bottle are also recommended.

Registration and payment will be accepted until the first day of camp. If you would like to discuss need-based financial aid or alternate payment plans, those options are available. Please contact the Education Director Andy McGuire at 641-672-3795 or youth@georgedaily.org. More information and registration forms can be picked up at the George Daily Auditorium office, in Oskaloosa’s schools, or online at www.georgedaily.org under the Education tab.
