NEW ULM, MINN. — Four players scored in double figures for the Central College men’s basketball team Thursday en route to an 88-69 victory over Martin Luther (Minn.).

The Dutch held the lead the entire contest, shooting 45 percent from the floor and 31 percent from 3-point range. The largest Central lead was 24, coming at the 5:06 mark of the second half.

“We did a good job putting pressure on (Martin Luther’s) defense tonight,” said coach Craig Douma. “That being said, we played like it was the end of finals week.”

Douma did not like the 18 turnovers his team committed.

“We didn’t take care of the ball tonight,” he said. “Most of our turnovers were very sloppy.”

Central outrebounded the Knights 58-13, 18 of those coming on the offensive end.

“We rebounded the ball really well tonight,” said coach Craig Douma. “We played hard and hit the glass when we needed to.”

Junior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak, Iowa) set a career high with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. He nailed 4-of-8 shots from behind the arc, while bringing down eight rebounds and dishing out two assists.

“Pete is playing really well right now,” Douma said. “He did a good job attacking the rim and shooting from the perimeter. He’s getting more comfortable as the season progresses.”

Junior forward Colby Taylor (Creston, Iowa) was the leading Dutch scorer, going for 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and the 16th of his career.

Sophomore guard Kyle Smith (Ionia, Iowa/New Hampton HS) notched 10 points, while junior forward Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Iowa/Sioux Central HS) went for a season-high 17 on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. Glawe tacked on 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and his career.

“Austin shot the ball extremely well tonight,” Douma said. “The guys did a good job finding him and he played within himself.”

The Dutch will break for the holidays before traveling to Puerto Rico for games Dec. 28 and 29. Central will take on SUNY-Oneonta on the 28th at 4 p.m. before a tilt with Vassar (N.Y.) on the 29th at 4 p.m.

“The kids are excited for a break,” Douma said. “Getting some time with their families will be good for them.”
