Christmas Services at First Christian Reformed Church
IGNITE Youth Group of the First Christian Reformed Church invites the community Sun., December 13 to a Candlelight Service at 6 pm in the church with fellowship and refreshments to follow. The program has been chosen by the high school seniors and will feature readings, music, instruments, and of course the lighting of candles. The story of Christmas is the story of God bringing comfort to his people. It is the story of God coming down into this world to pay for our sins. God came into this world in a most unusual way: He came as a baby. And the story of his birth takes place in the most unexpected places. Throughout the service one will visit these places and witness the story of Christ’s birth unfolding.
The Children’s Choir (preK-8th) will present a program “The Real Twelve Days of Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 9:30 am. What is the real meaning behind this familiar carol? In the sixteenth century, England proclaimed an official state church, and any other religion was strictly forbidden. Using lyrics and song, folks of that day were able to teach children their beliefs. This song can be freely sung without ever using God’s name, yet the words and even the repetitive pattern represent God’s good gifts that continue to bless us all.
A third opportunity to enjoy the season would be to attend the Christmas morning cantata “Christmas in His Presence” at 9:30 on Dec. 25. This adult choir celebration features moments such as a congregational carol sing, responsive readings, and captivating solos. You will find the joy and peace of Christ in this musical for the season arranged by Marty Hamby. The well-known songs and new titles will fill your heart with excitement of the Lord and bring you closer to His love and grace for all.
All services will be at the church at 815 North 11th St. in Oskaloosa. If you have any questions call the church at 641.673.4272 or email firstcrcosky@mahaska.org.
