Statesmen Knocked off by Benedictine
Atchison, Kan.–The William Penn men’s soccer team entered Saturday hoping to keep itself in position to host a league tourney game, but instead took a step back in a 3-2 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Benedictine.
The Statesmen (8-7-1, 4-4 Heart), who could have locked up a postseason berth with a win, outshot the Ravens (6-6-1, 1-5-1 Heart) by an 11-10 tally.
Sergio Carro (Sr., London, England, Communications) struck first with an unassisted goal just 6:16 into the night. The senior now has four goals this year.
Benedictine answered right back less than four minutes later. The contest remained tied 1-1 until the early minutes of the second half when the Ravens took their first lead in the 67th minute.
Joni Cruz (Jr., Salinas, Calif., Psychology) then kept the navy and gold in the match by recording his second goal of 2015 to knot the game at 2-2 at 72:38.
Unfortunately, BC, which played in its 11th one-goal game, broke the tie for good in the 83rd minute. The Statesmen failed to post an answer in the final minutes.
Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) saved four shots in the loss.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in Heart play at 7:30 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Night.
