WPU Falls Short Against #8 Ravens

Atchison, Kan.–The Statesmen women’s soccer team was not able to pull off the monumental upset in a 6-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference setback to #8 Benedictine Saturday.

William Penn (5-10, 2-6 Heart) nearly shut out the Ravens (14-1-1, 6-1-1 Heart) in the second half. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done in the initial half as the home team scored five times before the break.

Alyce Correia (Jr., Perth, Australia, Exercise Science) finally got WPU on the board in the 86th minute with a penalty kick score. The goal is Correia’s second this fall.

Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) finished with a season-high 14 saves Saturday.

“We started well, but our defensive setup allowed for a lot of confusion and I blame myself tactically for the first 30 minutes or so,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “Benedictine is a very good team and was able to force its will on the game.”

“However, our group came out in the second half and worked well together and played more like we know we can,” McGowan added. “We gave a good account of ourselves during the second 45 minutes but the damage had been done earlier in the game.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in Heart play at 5 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Night.
