WPU Falls 3-1 in Final Non-Conference Road Matchup
Forest City–The Statesmen volleyball team was unable to avenge an earlier-season loss with a 3-1 non-conference setback to Waldorf Saturday.
William Penn (6-18) lost by scores of 16-25, 25-22, 13-25, 9-25. The team, which also fell 3-1 to Waldorf on September 1, was outhit .231-.037.
After dropping the opening set, WPU gave up the first point of the second set, but answered with seven points in a row and never trailed again to win its lone round.
The navy and gold continued to roll in the third set with a 4-0 advantage and remained on top until 20-19. The Warriors (7-22) unfortunately scored four straight and six of the final nine points for the 2-1 edge. The Statesmen ran out of gas in the final set to end the afternoon.
Alexis Weatherspoon (Fr., Kansas City, Mo., Physical Education) tallied a team-best eight kills, while Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) and Shawni Wills (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) each had seven winners. Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) added six kills as well Saturday.
Simmons also managed team highs in digs (11) and aces (4), and Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) finished with 30 assists. Weatherspoon paced the defensive net effort with four block assists.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Friday to host #19 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 7 p.m.
