The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of October is in honor of Melvin M. Kennedy.

Melvin enlisted in the Army, January 25, 1942, at Fort Des Moines, IA. He was sent to the European Theatre in June of 1944 where he served as an Administrative NCO in the Rhineland. In July 1945, he was sent to the Pacific Theatre where he served in the Liberation of the Philippines. He was discharged, November 30, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

Upon his return to Iowa, he was employed by Coca Cola as a truck driver. October 19, 1954, he began working at Iowa Valve now Clow Valve Company, painting valves. After almost 30 years, he retired as Supervisor of Inventory Control, May 1, 1984.
