Through the efforts of past and current citizens, Oskaloosa can boast…yes, boast…about a number of things that a community our size rarely has. Here’s a short list: we are blessed with three outstanding golf courses, 15 miles of bike trails, the Lacey Recreational Complex, a beautiful downtown square with a good number of truly unique stores selling everything from antiques to home décor, several outstanding restaurants serving everything from coffee to Chinese to Mexican to American cuisines, a growing William Penn University and Mahaska Health Partnership, internationally known Musco Mobile Lighting, Interpower and Cablevey, numerous neighborhoods with newer homes in addition to beautiful tree lined streets showcasing some of our outstanding older homes. There is a lot of good going on right here.

Yet like any community, we have our challenges. It is incumbent upon all of us to turn those challenges into opportunities, and that is what a new generation of Oskaloosans is planning to do: insure our Oskaloosa is a thriving, beautiful, desirable community for years to come. They want to build on the good that already exists. They want to take what we have and make it better for all of us. The Roger Brooks Branding Committee has worked to develop ideas and possibilities for our community. Instead of asking why, they’ve said why not? Instead of assuming that something just won’t work because it couldn’t possibly work here, they’re saying let’s give it a try. Optimism – the Branding Committee has it, and I for one am excited to see what they have planned for the future of Oskaloosa.
