In 2013, Lacey Youth Fulfillment committee launched “Play it Forward” after reviewing collected data from schools in the Oskaloosa community. To meet the needs of local, active youth interested in participating in recreation activities the recycled sporting equipment program was brought to life. The first collection took place at the OHS Old Shoe game in 2013 and the committee encouraged all parents to “bring your old shoes to the Old Shoe Game!” In the first year, MCRF was able to collect 106 gently used, sporting items and once spring arrived over 75 items had been given away. The Lacey Youth Fulfillment committee is committed to MCRF’s mission statement, “Facilitate and promote recreation in the Mahaska Community.” On August 21st, committee members, Kandis Klyn (MCRF Activities Manager) and David Phelps (YMCA Executive Director), collected over 100 donated sporting items at the Old Shoe Game thanks to supportive OHS football fans. On Wednesday, United Way organized for Bank Iowa volunteers to clean the donated equipment for United Way Day of Caring. Within a few hours all the equipment was cleaned, sorted and labeled. Thank you, Bank Iowa! Drop off and pick up is located at the MCRF Office (2055 238th Street Oskaloosa). Stop on out, say “hello” and feel free to drop off your gently used sporting gear or pick something up. We would love to see you!
