September 2015 – Bandstand Flag Notice

Roy Edwards

September 16, 1922 – November 19, 2014

Signalman

United States Navy

*******************************

The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of September is in honor of Roy Edwards.

When he was drafted in October 1943, Roy chose the Navy where he was a signalman first class aboard an APA (troop ship). He served in the Pacific with landings on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He landed with maneuvers on D-Day in Iwo Jima and he saw the flag raised through binoculars on Mount Suribachi. Roy remembers his experience in the Navy as not pleasurable, but had many interesting experiences including liberty in Japan at the time of the peace treaty signing. He was discharged April 4, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and returned to Oskaloosa where he eventually opened a radiator shop, Oskaloosa Radiator Service, which he operated for many years.
