Orange City–Calmer waters are on the horizon, but this weekend the seas were stormy as the William Penn volleyball team was winless at the Northwestern Classic Friday and Saturday.

William Penn (1-5) was swept twice on Friday, first by Briar Cliff (11-25, 21-25, 11-25) and then by #12 Northwestern (13-25, 10-25, 13-25). On Saturday, the Statesmen were swept by #9 Midland (Neb.) (7-25, 16-25, 11-25) and then fell 3-1 to Mayville State (N.D.) (25-27, 16-25, 25-18, 18-25).

Briar Cliff 3, WPU 0

Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) guided the offense with six kills, while five more winners came from both Shawni Wills (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) and Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology).

Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) assisted 20 times and Simmons also dug six Charger attempts.

Northwestern 3, WPU 0

It was extremely tough sledding for the navy and gold against the host program as Hartman and Natalie Sieck (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa, Sociology) led the way with only three kills apiece. Jusino’s five assists and the five digs from Danielle Breeher (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) were also team highs.

Midland 3, WPU 0

Hartman was again at the top offensively with five points, while Jusino narrowly missed a double-double with nine assists and eight digs. Breeher concluded the match with nine digs.

Mayville State 3, WPU 1

The Statesmen played their best ball in the weekend finale as they were outhit only .191-.128. Wills reached double figures with 12 kills and Hartman and Simmons managed eight each. Erika Getz (Sr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) was good for another seven winners.

Jusino recorded 28 assists and another 16 came via Haley Smith (Fr., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education). Jusino and Breeher served up two aces each and Breeher posted a 15-dig showing. Wills topped the defensive effort with three block assists.
