East Chicago, Ind.–The Statesmen women’s soccer team got in the win column on the first day of 2015 with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Mount Mercy at the Calumet-St. Joseph Crimson Wave Invitational Saturday.

William Penn (1-0), which outshot the Mustangs (2-2) by a tally of 14-6, will now face host CCSJ in Sunday’s championship game at 2 p.m.

2014 redshirt AnnaMarie Urps (Fr., Wilton, Calif., Physical Education) opened up the day’s scoring with an unassisted goal at the 15:31 mark.

Newcomer Hannah Baker (Fr., Adelaide, Australia, Biology) doubled the advantage in the 40th minute when she finished off a pass from Silvia Munoz (Sr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education). Baker tied Alyce Correia (Jr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) with a game-high three shots (all of Baker’s attempts were on goal).

Lauren Abbas (Sr., Adel, Iowa, Communications) then wrapped up the successful first stanza with an unassisted tally with 27 seconds left until intermission.

The second 45 minutes were quiet, but Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) did add a save for a three-save shutout in her first appearance in the navy and gold.

“We worked hard this week on team shape and today we saw the benefits of that,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “I am delighted to see us score the ways we did and keep the clean sheet. We certainly have work to do, but this is a great result for us against a local rival who made things difficult for us at times.”

“I was also really impressed with our bench players coming in and injecting some intensity into the play,” McGowan added. “Our new players stepped up and shrugged off the early nerves as well.”
