Clinton–The William Penn men’s soccer squad came up short in its attempt to start 2015 with an upset over a ranked foe, falling 2-0 to #15 Ashford in non-conference play Wednesday.

The Statesmen (0-1) played to an even draw through the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the home team, which was playing its final home opener in its history, broke through in the 47th minute; Ashford is closing at the end of the school year.

The Saints managed an insurance goal at the 60:53 mark. WPU could not provide an answer as it was outshot 12-1 with Angelo Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) tallying the lone shot.

Freshman goalkeeper Max Stamer (Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) stopped four AU attempts in the setback.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Whiting, Ind. to compete in the CCSJ Crimson Wave Invitational Saturday and Sunday. The Statesmen face Mount Mercy in the opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CST). Depending on that result, WPU will then play in either the championship or consolation game on Sunday.
