Cary C. Harten, 52, of Oskaloosa died July 24, 2015, at his home in Oskaloosa. Cary was born April 12, 1963, at Jefferson, Iowa, the son of Robert and Phyllis Stark Harten.

Cary graduated from Indianola High School with the class of 1981. Following high school he attended Southwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri.

Cary moved to Oskaloosa after college and went to work helping his father at Quad County Lawn and Quad County Grain. He later went to work at Pella Corporation and then Vermeer. In late 2003, Cary’s type I diabetes, became more challenging to manage, thus Cary was unable to continue working.

Cary loved to golf and enjoyed his time on the golf team at Indianola High School. He enjoyed all sports and had a great time talking Raiders football with his sister Jill. A trip to the Men’s NCAA elite 8 tournament games with his dad was a great memory for both of them.

He also enjoyed riding his bicycle, playing cribbage, gardening and traveling. Cary took great pride in harvesting peppers and tomatoes from his garden and making the spiciest recipe he could.

His family includes his parents, Robert and Phyllis Harten of Oskaloosa; his sister, Jill Harten of San Diego, California; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

As was Cary’s wish, his body has been cremated and no services are planned. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
