Favorite Kody Swanson suffered a broken axle to finish 12th

NEWTON, Iowa (June 20, 2015) – Saturday’s Casey’s General Stores 100 at Iowa Speedway was USAC’s first appearance at the Fastest Short Track on the Planet in three years. Aaron Pierce was fastest in practice but Kody Swanson won the pole by turning a lap in 22.407 seconds (140.581 mph). Swanson also holds the 1-lap Iowa Speedway track record of 146.212 mph set in 2012.

Swanson won seven of the last 13 Silver Crown races but it was three-time USAC Iowa winner Bobby Santos who powered his way to Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane for the first time in a Silver Crown Series car. Santos won USAC Midget races at Iowa Speedway in 2009, 2010 and 2012.

“Man, a hundred miles in these cars is very difficult mechanically,” Santos said. “I’m actual more proud as a mechanic than I am a driver in this deal. I helped put this car together with the guys in the shop.”

Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane lets fans celebrate along with the winning driver and team as they enjoy Casey’s Pizza. Santos savored his slice after capitalizing on a restart with two laps to go and cruising to his first USAC Silver Crown Series win of 2015.

“There’s nothing better than pizza in Victory Lane,” said Santos. “I’m a picky eater, and one of my first midget wins here was supreme pizza. And I told them, ‘Next year, bring back pepperoni.’ We won the race the next year and they brought back pepperoni. It was pretty cool. Can’t complain about the cheese today, though — it was good.”

Next up for the Fastest Short Track on the Planet is the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 July 17-18. Grammy Award winning band Blues Traveler will perform following the July 17 ARCA Racing Series 150. Blues Traveler will hit the Pork Party Pavilion, overlooking Turn 4, approximately one hour after the checkered flag is waved. Iowa Speedway will host the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 – the 14th race of the season – July 18, 2015.
