Oskaloosa, Iowa – It’s often stated that the Nelson Pioneer Farm is a hidden gem in Mahaska County.
On Saturday, little gems of knowledge were passed along to its visitors as they learned about the art of rope making and other forms of “knots, loops and other twisted crafts.” Quilting, braided rug making, and needle art were also a big part of the day.
The annual event was different than years past, as visitors were encouraged to walk and explore the different facilities, where they could find stations that demonstrated the various skills.
While the day was overcast and the rain threatened, driving down attendance, Curator Kelly Halbert is well into putting the final touches on July’s month long ‘Laura’s Days’ events.
During the month of July, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-4pm, attendees will learn the skills and stories from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ‘Little House’ books.
The Nelson Pioneer Farm will also be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Fall Festival.
Every year, the Fall Festival is the largest event for the Nelson Pioneer Farm, and this year, they will again bring to life the skills, talents and history of Mahaska County’s Early Settlers.
The Fall Festival is scheduled for September 19th, from 9:30 am to 4pm.
