Oskaloosa, IA – Children of all ages are invited to kick off a summer of heroic fun at the Oskaloosa Public Library on June 1. This year’s “Every Hero Has a Story” Summer Reading Kick-Off Party will take place in the Library’s Reading Garden from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 1.

The “Every Hero Has a Story” Children’s Summer Reading Program will run from June 1 to July 24 this year. Parents can register their children for the program in person and online as early as 10:00 a.m. on June 1.

Evening activities in the Reading Garden on June 1 will include crafts, coloring activities, photo ops and interactive story times with the George Daily Youth Theater. The kick-off party will also include free hot dogs provided by the Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program, popcorn provided by the Optimists Club, and SnoBiz provided by Mahaska Drug.

Visits from local fire fighters and police officers, Ventriloquist Kevin Horner, the Blank Park Zoo, and Magician Rick Brammer are scheduled throughout the summer. Full event schedules are available now online and at the Library’s first floor circulation desk.

And Summer Reading isn’t just for kids! Teens who’ve completed at 6th through 12th grade can pick up an “Unmask!” reading log and schedule of events at the second floor desk starting June 1. Weekly events for teens include chess club, Dungeons and Dragons, and craft programs.

Adults can pick up an “Everyday Heroes” reading log and schedule of events at the second floor desk as well. Book discussions, retro video game nights, a Visit with Laura Ingalls Wilder, and an Iowa Cold Cases presentation will be among the programs offered for adults.

The Library’s annual summer reading program wouldn’t be possible without the support of many area businesses and organizations. For more information about the Summer Reading Programs, you can visit the Library’s website at www.oskaloosalibrary.org.
