Janet Marie Smith, 57, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, May 10, 2015, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born Friday, June 7, 1957 in Ottumwa the daughter of Melvin C. and Opal M. Walker Benson.

Janet graduated from the Ottumwa High School with the class of 1975. On July 5, 1975, Janet was united in marriage to Roger Dean Smith in Ottumwa and he died December 10, 2008.

Janet worked as a babysitter for a few years before going to work at Orscheln in Oskaloosa for 28 years, until illness forced her retirement in February 2015.

Janet was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed camping, reading, gardening, she loved her grandchildren and visiting with her family and friends.

Her family includes a son, Michael (& Angie) Smith of Beacon; a daughter, Beth Smith of Oskaloosa; three grandchildren: Rachel, Brady and Reed; her mother, Opal Benson of Oskaloosa; three sisters: Judy (& Orval) Stuckemeyer of Bradenton, Florida, Joyce (& Marvin) Roemen of Fairfield, Iowa and Jennifer (& Rob) Watkins of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; maternal and paternal grandparents; four brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Brown officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 12 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet family and friends.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
