(DES MOINES) – Thursday, Rep. Guy Vander Linden (R-Oskaloosa) voted to freeze tuition for in-state students at Iowa’s three Regents institutions.

In 2013, the Iowa Board of Regents instituted the Transparent, Inclusive Efficient Review (TIER) program at Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. This program was designed to find efficiencies in the institutions. According to the Board of Regents, the results of the program have estimated savings up to $80 million.

In debate on the education appropriations bill, Vander Linden voted to take any cost savings that result to offset the costs of a freeze of tuition for Iowa students.

“Using the savings found by the efficiency study to freeze tuition is a commonsense approach to deliver more affordable tuition for Iowa students and families while at the same time not spending more than the state takes in,” said Vander Linden.

The measure received overwhelmingly bipartisan support.
