CEDAR RAPIDS — Despite pounding out 23 hits against Coe Saturday, the Central College baseball team split the doubleheader, winning 8-0 in the opener and falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

The Dutch (12-17, 8-10 conference) rekindled their offensive prowess Saturday against the Kohawks (20-19, 12-9 conference). After scoring just five runs in Friday’s doubleheader, the Dutch tripled that number and scored 15 Saturday off 23 Central hits.

“After not hitting the ball well on Friday, I really challenged the offense to step up today and they did,” coach Matt Schirm said. “We had a lot better at-bats and we didn’t swing at so many pitches out of the zone. It was much better day offensively for us.”

Michael Reuter (sophomore, Monticello) has started 21 games behind the plate for Central this season, but found success as a designated hitter in game one, setting career highs with four hits and four RBI’s.

“He’s flown under the radar this season because of the season that Zach Zylstra (senior, Pella, Pella Christian HS) and Kirby Coppess (senior, Urbandale) have put together.” Schirm said. “He’s quietly having a really good year offensively and had some big hits today in that first game for us.”

Adam Lindell’s (junior, Denver, Colo., Arapahoe HS) had two doubles in game one and connected on his second home run of the season in game two. Lindell, who didn’t play last season after transferring to Central, is starting to get hot at the right time.

“He’s the one guy that’s a power threat in our lineup,” Schirm said. “He’s delivered some extra-base hits on multiple occasions. He hit the ball hard today and had some big hits for us.”

Dylan Diveney (freshman, Marshalltown) pitched a complete-game shutout in the opener to earn the victory. The freshman scattered seven hits and struck out two over seven innings on the mound. In game two, Matt Schissel (junior, Rock Island, Alleman HS) got the start, going eight innings and giving up six runs on seven hits. Alex Dornacker (freshman, West Des Moines, Iowa, Valley HS) took the loss after giving up the game-winning home run in the ninth inning.

Central will host a midweek doubleheader Tuesday against Simpson starting at 1 p.m. Central took two from Simpson in Indianola on March 31 and Schirm knows his team needs to complete the sweep and win both games in Pella to stay in the conference race.

“They’re really big games for us,” he said. “After dropping three games this weekend it’s really important that we win those two games on Tuesday and get back on track before we face Luther next weekend.”
