Lawrence, Kan.–The Statesmen men’s golf team shot low early, but could not maintain that level of excellence at the Baker Invitational Wednesday and Thursday.

William Penn finished fourth out of nine teams with a three-round score of 938 (304-322-312) at the par-72 Alvamar Golf Course. The team topped the standings after the first 18 holes and was still just two strokes out of first after all 36 holes were contested on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, WPU could not draw any closer to day one leaders Graceland and Rockhurst (Mo.). It was actually Missouri Valley surprisingly that took the title, jumping from fifth place with a 299 in the last round (317-317-299–933).

The 54-hole event was a bit of warm-up for William Penn–physically and mentally–for the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships on April 28-29 which will also feature three rounds of play, including two on the first day.

Nick Arman of Rockhurst won the individual crown in the 58-person event with a final score of 224 (72-78-74).

Gareth Sargent (Fr., Knysna, South Africa, Psychology) paced the navy and gold in a tie for fourth at 228 (73-78-77). Tyler Lallier (Sr., Algona, Iowa, Business Management) was also in the top 10, tying for eighth at 233 (81-79-73).

Clay Tucker (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) tied for 17th at 238 (76-81-81), and Frederik Lundsgaard (Fr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) (77-87-81) and Spencer Skipper (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) (78-84-83) tied each other for 32nd at 245.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Boonville, Mo. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Central Methodist Open. Play will be contested at Hail Ridge Golf Course.
