Marleen Curry, 93, of Oskaloosa passed away Thursday evening, April 16, 2015, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Serenity House.

Marleen L. “M.L.” Curry, son of Charles A. and Elsie M. Smith Curry, was born, December 14, 1921, at What Cheer, Iowa.

Marleen was a 1940 graduate of What Cheer High School.

Following his education, Marleen worked at the Burlington Iron Works in West Burlington, Iowa; during this time, he stayed with a cousin during the week and traveled home on the week-ends. Marleen married Betty I. Wymore on July 27, 1942, in Princeton, Missouri. He entered the Coast Guard in 1943 and served until 1946. Marleen and Betty lived on farms near Indianapolis and Delta before moving to their farm east of What Cheer in 1951. They lived there until 1961, when they moved to Oskaloosa and Marleen established the Curry Wilbert Vault Company. Marleen operated the company until he sold it in 1977.

Betty passed away, June 30, 1988. Marleen then married Leona Roth in 1991.

Marleen enjoyed escaping the Iowa winters for many years, spending 19 winters in Arizona, Florida and Texas. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing and especially coffee time with friends.

He was a member of the American Legion and an active member of the Honor Guard for more than 45 years.

His family includes his wife, Leona of Oskaloosa; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Harrison and Gary McMains of Cedar Rapids; and a son and daughter-in-law, Max and Barbara Curry of Fremont; five grandchildren and their spouses: Douglas (& Dorene) Harrison of Philadelphia, PA and their daughter, Sidney; Deborah (& Douglas) Lowe of Salt Lake City, UT and their daughter, Grace; Bradley (& Pamela) Harrison of Chanhassen, MN and their children: Nate, Ben and Emma; Jason (& Cindy) Curry of Oceanside, CA and their children: Dakota, Chase and Cody; and Jared (& Crystal) Curry of Fremont and their children: Paris and Rowdy.

In addition to his parents, Marleen was preceded in death by his wife Betty; a brother, Berdette; and a sister, Roberta.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday morning, April 20, 2015, at Forest Cemetery.
Military Honors will be presented by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held Monday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., a procession will form at that time to travel to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #34 or the MHP Hospice Serenity House.

The cemetery’s North 11th Street entrance should be used by those not meeting at the funeral home.
