Phyllis Ver Steeg, 87, of Oskaloosa passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa. Phyllis Darlene Ver Steeg, daughter of John and Mary (Dye) Brandenhorst, was born March 3, 1928, in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Phyllis was a 1946 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. She married Bob Otto Ver Steeg, September 28, 1947, in Oskaloosa.

Following her education, Phyllis worked at the Woolworth Store and later as a welder at Ideal Manufacturing. After her children were born, Phyllis stayed home to care for them. She and Bob purchased Stephen’s Cleaners in 1967, and she worked alongside him operating the business until 1990, when they retired.

Phyllis loved spending holidays and birthdays with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also greatly enjoyed the company of her many friends at the senior center.

Phyllis’ memory is honored by her daughter, Kathy Pitts of Pella; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Lori Ver Steeg of Oxford, MI.; seven grandchildren and their spouses: Michelle (& Jamie) Van Kooten of Reasnor, IA, Lisa (& Bob) West of Pella, Jamie (& Jason) Chapman of Pella, Michael Pitts Jr of Pella, Andy Ver Steeg of Kalamazoo, MI, and Matt and Marshall Ver Steeg of Oxford, MI.; and she will be lovingly remembered by her 18 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, John and Joyce Brandenhorst of Bend, OR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Brandenhorst; her beloved husband Bob of 57 years; a sister, Rosemary Christophel; and two great grandsons: Zachary Van Kooten and Weston Chapman.

Funeral Services for Phyllis will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Andy Baker of Central Reformed Church officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday morning; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made to Mahaska Health Partnership Hospice Services.
