Richard Brooks, 56, of Oskaloosa passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, at his home in Oskaloosa. Richard Lee Brooks, son of Albert and Evangeline “Vangie” Slycord Brooks, was born May 19, 1956 in Davenport, Iowa.

Richard grew up and attended school in the Rose Hill and Oskaloosa areas. Richard took job training through Pine Ridge Job Corps in Chadron, Nebraska. After his return home, he worked for a meat packing plant in Pella and later for several car lots in Oskaloosa and the surrounding area, including Lafrenz Motors.

Richard enjoyed working on car motors. He had a blue Pontiac convertible he adored. He was also a fabulous cook, and at summer family BBQs, he loved treating everyone to a wonderful meal. He will always be remembered for his wonderful pumpkin bars, they were the best.

Later in life, Richard took care of his mother until his health also began to decline.

At the time of his death Richard’s family included his mother, Evangeline Slycord of Oskaloosa; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald (& Anne) Brooks of Fremont and Paul (& Carolyn) Brooks of Muscatine; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara (& Joseph) Fletcher of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Brooks.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel for Richard; his brother, Norman Brooks; and his mother, Evangeline Slycord. The family will be present from 2-4 p.m. to greet visitors.
Burial of their cremated remains will be held privately at Forest Cemetery.
