Evangeline “Vangie” Slycord, 89, of Oskaloosa passed away Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Oskaloosa Care Center. Evangeline Catherine Slycord, daughter of John and Beulah (Evans) Whitlock, was born on April 6, 1925, in Oskaloosa.

After attending school in Oskaloosa, Vangie married Albert Brooks and lived in the Greenview addition, where she spent most of her life.

Vangie worked briefly at the naval ship yard in Portland, Oregon during the early 1940’s, before moving back to Oskaloosa. In 1959 she married Jack Hudson and was a cook at various nursing homes and restaurants in Oskaloosa.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed and will always be remembered, especially for her Christmas Boxes.

Vangie’s family includes her two sons: Paul (& Carolyn) Brooks of Muscatine, IA and Donald (& Anne) Brooks of Fremont, IA; a daughter, Barbara Hudson (& Joe) Fletcher of Oskaloosa, IA; Eight grandchildren: Chris (& Dan) Brooks of Seattle, WA, Rebecca Anderson and Cherrie Linderman of Muscatine, IA, Kim Long, David Allgood and Amanda Ramirez of Oskaloosa, IA and Tabitha McClenon of Ohio; 17 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren; as well as special nieces and nephews, Judy Greenhalgh, Shirley Nance, Vernie Nance and Tim Nance.

In addition to her parents, Vangie was preceded in death by two sons: Norman and Richard Brooks; a sister, Francis Nance; a grandson, Kelly Brooks; and one great-grandson, Malahkaih Smith.

A Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel for Evangeline and her two sons, Norman and Richard Brooks. The family will be present from 2-4 p.m. to greet visitors.
Burial of their cremated remains will be held privately at Forest Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in their names and will be designated at a later time.
