Allen “A.G.” L. Goemaat, 62, of New Sharon, died Monday, April 6, 2015, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. He was born July 12, 1952, in Oskaloosa, the son of Jake and Helen Cubit Goemaat.

Allen graduated from North Mahaska High School with the class of 1970. Following graduation he completed auto mechanic training. In 1981, he was united in marriage to Valerie Crosby, and to this union a son Michael was born. Allen and Valerie later divorced.

Allen started his career as an auto mechanic immediately following school. He returned from training and worked with Louie Anders, forming A.G. Motors. Allen then rented a bay in the Oskaloosa Service Center and enjoyed working on automobiles alongside Verlan “Fish” Eveland at that location. In the mid 1990’s he relocated A.G. Motors to the current location on South ‘H’ Street.

Allen was a member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. He enjoyed hunting arrowheads, tending to his cattle, going to auctions, tinkering on the farm and collecting oil cans. He was a devoted father to Mike, and truly enjoyed watching Mike play baseball and softball. He was always willing to help out with needs in the community. He delighted in being a grandfather.

His family includes a son and his wife, Michael and Julie Goemaat of New Sharon; four grandchildren, Kiara, Sierra, Noah and Ava; his mother, Helen Goemaat of Oskaloosa; three sisters: Linda Foster of New Sharon, Chris Nieuwsma of Oskaloosa and Becky (& Ken) Rozenboom of Oskaloosa; a brother, Gary (& Cheryl) Goemaat of New Sharon; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 10, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
A family prayer service will be at 10:15 a.m. Friday in the basement of the church.
Burial will be in the Union Mills Cemetery, east of New Sharon. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-8 p.m. Thursday to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the family to be used for his grandchildren’s education.
