John Dunaway, 94, of New Vienna, Ohio, and formerly of the Sigourney, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015 at the Dayton VA Hospice Unit. He was born Monday, August 16, 1920 in Ollie, Iowa, son of Charles Miller& Alicia Marie McLansborough Dunaway.

Following high school, John joined the United States Navy where he completed flight training and fought in WWII. John was united in marriage to Ellen Bastiansean Dunaway.

Following marriage, John worked as a carpenter in Minneapolis, MN. He moved back to the Fremont area in the 1960’s where he farmed and did carpentry work, especially for Parson’s College. He sold the farm and retired in the early 2000’s. He still checked on the farm daily when he was living in Iowa and when he moved to New Vienna, Ohio, he checked on things at his daughter’s farm.

John loved Black Angus cattle, health and nutrition, reading western novels and his family. His favorite hobby was hard work. He was a member of the American Legion and early on was very active in the Methodist Church.

John is survived by four daughters: Cynthia (& Paul) Murphy of Minneapolis, MN, Nancy (& Mike) McCormick of New Vienna, OH, Betsy (& David) Von Muenster of New Liberty, IA and Kristin (& Thomas) Resek of Camden, Maine; three sons: Thomas (& Lori) Dunaway of Minneapolis, MN, Timothy (& Mary) Dunaway of Shelbiana, MO and Eric (& Cheryl) Dunaway of Minnetrista, MN; 11 grandchildren: Zachary, Tyler, Megan, and Mitchel Dunaway, Jennifer and Tess McCormick, Steven and Lisa Von Muenster, Benjamin and Andy Resek, and Bryan; 5 great-grandchildren: Tallia McCormick, Anna Bella and Emmaline Von Muenster, Lilly Dunaway, and Theo Resek; and a sister, Jean Barry.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, Andy Dunaway; a brother, James Dunaway; and two sisters, Helen Dunaway and Ruth Camp.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont.
Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery, near Rose Hill.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 12 Noon until the time of service at 1 PM.
Memorials may be made in John’s memory to Dayton VA Hospice, 4100 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio 45428.
