Oskaloosa (Fremont), Iowa | Age 84

Vicky Robertson Bauer, 84, of Oskaloosa and formerly of the Fremont area passed away Sunday morning at the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House. Voleda “Vicky” Hazel Bauer was born, April 28, 1930, in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania, the youngest of eleven children born to Charles Merlin and Lena Maude (Corey) Barrows.

The family moved to Franklin, New York where Vicky received her education. She married Chester “Chet” Robertson Sr., November 2, 1946, in Sidney, New York, after his discharge from the Navy. Chet was from Oskaloosa and after a few years in New York he and Vicky brought their family home to Iowa.

While her children were young, Vicky stayed at home to care for them. Vicky was a terrific cook and in 1980, she took a job operating the Cozy Corner Café in Fremont. In 1988, she and Chet moved to Thompson, Iowa where she opened Vicky’s Café. A year after Chet’s death, in July 1991, Vicky moved to Des Moines. While living in Des Moines she met Willie Bauer and they were married, February 13, 1995, in Kansas City, Kansas. They eventually moved to Cedar and Vicky was hired as the assistant manager at the Casey’s General Store in Fremont. In addition to working at Casey’s, Vicky baked pies for the Canteen in Ottumwa and for so many others that she was known as the “Pie Lady” throughout the area.

Willie passed away, April 9, 2005, and in 2006, Vicky returned to live in Oskaloosa at the Shady Lodge Apartments. In September 2014, a decline in her health required a move to Crystal Heights Care Center.

Vicky was a member of the Good News Chapel; she enjoyed a good game of Pinochle and an occasional trip to a casino.

Vicky’s family includes her children and their spouses: Gail Yurgel of Oskaloosa, Alan (& Phyllis) Robertson of Fairfield, IA, Michael (& Mary) Robertson of Des Moines, Sue (& Doug) Witt of Cedar, Barry (& Susan) Robertson of Oskaloosa and Linda (& Mark) Kelley of Oskaloosa; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Roscoe Mart of Albia.

In addition to her parents, and her husbands Chet and Willie, Vicky was preceded in death by two sons: Chester Jr. and Gary Robertson; an infant granddaughter, Shawna Robertson; a son-in-law, John Yurgel; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Robertson; and ten brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Vicky will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Alvern Boetsma of the Good News Chapel officiating.
Burial will be in Old White Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the funeral chapel. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Memorials may be made in her name and will be designated at a later time.
