Silver for Sargent, WPU at Graceland Invite

Maryville, Mo.–The Statesmen men’s golf team put a scare into one of the better teams in the NAIA as it finished high at the Graceland Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday.

William Penn was second out of 10 programs with a two-day score of 600 (298-302) at the par-72 Mozingo Golf Course. AIB, unofficially #33 in the nation, led WPU by just one stroke after day one, but pulled away to win by 14 strokes (297-289–586).

Lucas Boyd of AIB made it a sweep for the Eagles, defeating Gareth Sargent (Fr., Knysna, South Africa, Psychology) in a playoff for medalist honors. Boyd shot 71-70–141, while Sargent went 70-71–141. They finished four shots ahead of the next-closest competitor in the 61-player field.

Spencer Skipper (Jr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) continued his hot start in the navy and gold, tying for fourth at 148 (73-75). Frederik Lundsgaard (Fr., Jebjerg, Denmark, History/Government) was also a top-10 placer as he tied for eighth at 152 (76-76).

Brandon Dizon (So., San Leandro, Calif., Sociology) carded a pair of 80s (160) to tie for 28th and Tyler Lallier (Sr., Algona, Iowa, Business Management) tied for 35th at 162 (79-83).

WPU’s second squad was on the course as well, finishing seventh in the team race at 638 (317-321). Byron Lindeque (Sr., Boksburg, South Africa, General Accounting) guided the crew in a tie for eighth at 152 (74-78), while Justin Bothma (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Business Management) was next in a tie for 18th at 156 (79-77).

Jeremy Swink (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Physical Education) (T-31st, 78-83–161), Peter Frederiksen (Fr., Hornslet, Denmark, Mechanical Engineering) (T-48th, 86-83–169), and Ben Roberts (Jr., Albia, Iowa, Industrial Technology) (T-54th, 86-93–179) played as well.

Next Up: William Penn is off during Easter Week, returning to action on Monday, April 6 by traveling to Fort Madison to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan Classic. Play will be held at Sheaffer Golf Course.
