WPU 96th in Final Winter Directors’ Cup Standings

Oskaloosa–Three All-Americans guided the William Penn athletics department into the top 100 as the final winter Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings were released Thursday.

The Statesmen earned 93.5 points in the winter to be currently 96th in the NAIA. A total of 169 NAIA institutions have scored points thus far, while nearly 300 schools comprise the division.

Headlined by a bronze from Scottie Bonds (So., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education), WPU’s wrestling squad tallied 55 points with a 19th-place finish at nationals. The indoor track and field team notched an additional 38.5 points with its 34th-place effort. Alex Edwards (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Elementary Education) took fourth and CJ Watts (Jr., Rockville, Md., Physical Education) was eighth at nationals.

Southern Oregon is first in the nation with 589 points, while Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) (567.5), Oklahoma Baptist (553.5), Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (540.5), and Wayland Baptist (Texas) (521.5) round out the top five.

William Penn ranks third among all Midwest Collegiate Conference institutions, while Grand View heads the group in 12th place with 376 points. St. Ambrose is 43rd with 186 points.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 12 sports-six men’s and women’s.
