Maxine Van Mersbergen, 85, of Roanoke, Virginia, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, January 25, 2015, at Carilion Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. She was born March 20, 1929, in Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of Dewey and Maude Drake.

Maxine graduated from Nashua High School with the class of 1947. She was united in marriage to Gaylen Thomason. To this union three children were born: Dorothy, Leslie and Brian. Gaylen passed away in 1974.

Maxine worked at Rath Corporation in Waterloo for 10 years. On October 26, 1979, she was united in marriage to James Van Mersbergen in Oskaloosa. Maxine worked at Baskin-Robbins from 1980-1985. Jim died on July 1, 2011. In 2012, Maxine moved to Virginia to be closer to her daughter Leslie.

Maxine was a very active member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed doing puzzles, word games and most of all reading her bible.

Her family includes her three children: Dorothy (& Mike) Ryan of Pleasant Hill, Leslie (& Virgil) Bruinekool of Roanoke, Virginia and Brian Thomason of Roanoke, Virginia; a granddaughter, Jennie (& Steve) Silverthorn; a great granddaughter, Breonna Silverthorn; two step sons, Ray (& Julie) Van Mersbergen of Ft. White, Florida and Don (& Winnie) Van Mersbergen of Oskaloosa.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dale Visser officiating.
A family prayer service will be at 10:15 Saturday morning in the fellowship hall of the church.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Friday, January 30, 2015 after 9 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel from 5 -7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
