Rose Johnson, 89, of Grinnell passed away Friday afternoon, January 16, 2015 at her home at Windsor Manor in Grinnell. Georgia Rose Johnson, the third daughter of Ed and Ollie (Phipps) Onthank, was born a few miles southwest of Grinnell on January 11, 1926.

Rose attended country schools in Poweshiek and Jasper Counties, graduating from the 8th grade in 1940. On February 23, 1945, Rose was united in marriage to Lyle Johnson. To this union one son was born, Lynn.

They farmed in Searsboro, Brooklyn and Grinnell areas most of their life. Rose was a typical farmer’s wife, helping Lyle on the farm wherever she was needed.

Rose loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and sister.

Rose enjoyed gardening, attending auctions, helping Lyle on the farm and attending her womens club every Wednesday.

She is survived by her four grandchildren: Bud Johnson of Eddyville, Bryan (& Kelli) Johnson of Olathe, Kansas, Allan Johnson of Eddyville, and Harmony (& Eric) Edge of Truax, Iowa; 12 great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; three sisters: Mollie (& Dick) Saunders of Grinnell, Grace (& Marvin) Davis of Montezuma, and Irene (& Dave) Kester of Montezuma; a brother-in-law, Paul Homer of Brookln; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Johnson; her son, Lynn Johnson; three sisters: Mildred Claybrook, Darlene Homer and Elsie Van Gorp; and two brothers’-in-law, Delmer Van Gorp and Wendell Claybrook.

Funeral services will begin at 1:30 pm Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Burial will be held in the West Liberty Cemetery west of Montezuma.
Visitation will begin after 1:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Liberty Cemetery Association.
