Majorie Allender, 90, of Oskaloosa passed away, Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the Oskaloosa Care Center. Marjorie Eileen Allender, daughter of Harold R. & Theora Olmstead Smiley, was born December 11, 1924, in Waterloo, Iowa.

Majorie was a 1943 graduate of West Waterloo High School. Prior to enrolling at the University of Northern Iowa, where she received a teaching degree in 1948, she worked as a secretary for two years.

June 5, 1955, Marjorie was united in marriage to Robert Earl Allender, in Waterloo.

Majorie’S first position as a teacher was in Monona, Iowa, where she taught business courses for 4 years. She went on to teach high school English, business courses and typing in Manchester, Davenport and Cedar Rapids Washington High School.
In 1959, she received her Master’s Degree in Business Education from the University of Northern Iowa.

She and Robert moved to Oskaloosa in 1979 and in 1980, she began teaching English as a Second Language to Asian refugees and a diversity of other nationalities through Indian Hills Community College. Marjorie remained there until her retirement in 1991.

Majorie was a member of Phi Delta Kappa. She was also a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, where she served as Deaconess, was a member of Lydia Circle and Christian Women’s Fellowship.

She also enjoyed traveling and music and played violin with the Waterloo and U.N.I. Symphonies.

Majorie Is survived by a nephew, John (& Pat) Mauser of Indianapolis, IN; three nieces: Jean (& Larry) McFarland of New Port Richey, FL; Carol (& Louis) Jambois of Lakeland, MN; Sally (& Del) Dockter of Madison, WI; a brother-in-law, Edwin (& Dorothy) Allender of Chillicothe, MO; a nephew, Steven (& Donna) Allender of Jackson, GA; a niece, Beatrice Allender Fernades of New Bedford, MA; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gwyneth Mauser of Waterloo, IA; and her husband, Robert on September 10, 2013.

Funeral Services for Marjorie will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 24, 2014, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Andrea Brownlee of the First Christian Church officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday; the family will be present to greet visitors from 10 a.m. to service time on Saturday morning.
