Open house planned to say thanks, goodbye and hello

Oskaloosa, IA – After nearly five years, Dawn Collins is stepping down from her position as Mahaska County YMCA Executive Director. She joined the Y in April 2010; her last day will be January 30. An interim director, David Phelps, has been hired by the Y Board and will begin January 26.

Phelps started his Y career in 1987 at the Black Hawk County YMCA in Waterloo. He brings to the Mahaska County Y many years of experience working YMCAs throughout Iowa, Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin. Over the next six months, Phelps will work closely with staff and the Board of Directors to develop a sustainability plan and bring the YMCA facilities and programs to the next level.

Additionally, the YMCA Board of Directors is announcing the resignation of Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Director Ryan Harkema and the hiring of Kathy Chamra as the new YMCA Child Care Director.

Harkema’s last day will be February 8. He has accepted a position with the City of Ankeny Parks and Recreation Department. Chamra began her duties at the Y January 12 after retiring as the SIEDA Child Development Director, a position she held for 13 years. Chamra has been working closely with Collins and the Y’s Preschool Director, Betty Phillips, to make sure there is a smooth transition for YMCA children, families and staff.

“Though there are a lot of changes,” said Board President Madonna Bowie, “we are confident and working toward the future. We appreciate the continued support and interest our membership and community have shown to the Y and are looking forward to an even better 2015.”

Bowie said an open house is planned for Wednesday, January 28 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the YMCA. “We invite you to join us to honor the dedicated efforts of Dawn and Ryan and introduce you to Dave and Kathy.” The YMCA is located at 414 North Third Street.
