Statesmen Battle at Missouri Valley Invite

Marshall, Mo.–Three individuals placed as the William Penn wrestling team competed at the Missouri Valley Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Statesmen tied for 12th with 55.5 points, while #1 Grand View easily claimed the team crown with 179 points.

Scottie Bonds (So., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) performed the best of the navy and gold grapplers as he was 5-1 with four falls to place third at 141 pounds. His lone loss was to the eventual champion.

Angelo Kelly (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) joined him as a placer at 141, going 2-2 to take eighth. Kyle Soderblom (Sr., Newton, Iowa, Biology) also found his way inside the top eight, managing sixth at 197 pounds. The senior finished 4-3 with two falls.

165-pounder Jay Fresh (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology) almost matched the trio, ending the weekend at 3-2 (one fall), one win away from the top eight.

133-pounder Khalil Williams (Fr., Decatur, Ga., Physical Education), 149-pounder Brad Watson (Jr., Rolla, Mo., Physical Education), and 157-pounder Charlton Benjamin (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) all won by fall, while Bryce Castagna (Fr., Willcox, Ariz., Digital Communication) had his hand raised once as well at 125 pounds.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Wednesday to host Missouri Valley and Grand View in a triangular. The Statesmen face Missouri Valley at 6:30 p.m. and Grand View at 8 p.m.
