Omaha, Neb.–A defensive-minded second half helped the Statesmen women’s basketball team to an 88-55 non-conference win over Grace (Neb.) Wednesday.

For the second-straight contest, William Penn (8-10) had a dozen players get the board, led by Alyssa Phillips (So., Gurnee, Ill., Communications) with 14 points.

The visitors shot 50.0% in the first half to lead 42-33 and then poured on the defense (Grace shot just 25.0% in the second half) after intermission to collect the easy victory. At night’s end, WPU outshot the Royals (2-16) by a 46.8%-32.8% tally.

A massive 59-33 rebounding edge was posted, while the navy and gold overcame 19 turnovers (21 for GU). Jessie Kreuser (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) headlined the glass attack with ten rebounds in addition to 11 points for her fourth double-double of the season.

Vanessa Kieres (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Exercise Science) and Destiny Spinner (Jr., Saginaw, Mich., Biology) also joined the double-figure crew with ten points each, while Janay Pritchett (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) had nine points.

Stevie Anderson (Fr., Kansas City, Mo., Digital Communication) and Kadejah Young (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Physical Education) finished with six points apiece as well. Katie Golomski (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology) assisted four times and Spinner had four steals.

“This was a good team win,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “The starting group came out of the second half and really separated themselves. Alyssa was really good running the floor and Jessie wore them down inside. It was good to see several of our bench players get extended minutes tonight.”
