Women’s Soccer Garners Sportsmanship Award

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s soccer team was much improved on the pitch this past fall in not only wins and losses but also in sportsmanship as the NSCAA honored the program recently.

William Penn earned a Bronze from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as it announced its Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award recipients.

In total, 125 teams received Gold, Silver, or Bronze recognition, which, according to the NSCAA “recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.”

Eight teams were at Gold status, 82 at Silver, and 35, including WPU, were at Bronze. Teams at the Bronze level accumulated no more than ten cards during the year. The navy and gold were issued just nine yellows on the campaign (no red cards).

William Penn was 7-8-3 (3-2-1 MCC) in 2014.
