Bellevue, Neb.–The William Penn men’s basketball gave the #9 team in the land quite a fight, but the Statesmen could not pull off the road upset in a 102-90 non-conference loss to Bellevue Saturday.

#21 WPU (11-5) was down only two points with 5:23 remaining. Unfortunately, the Bruins closed out the game strong to move to 10-2.

Kelly Madison (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Physical Education) paced the offense with 23 points, highlighted by five three-pointers.

Oliver Wells (Sr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Business Management) also had a highly-productive day with 21 points, nine assists, and four steals.

Alec Schwab (Sr., Peru, Ill., Business Management), with 17 points, and Shane Bosek (Jr., Lowry, Minn., Physical Education), with 12 points, also eclipsed the double-digit mark. Sam Sykes (Jr., Houston, Texas, Business Management) added seven points in the setback.

The visitors stayed close despite being outshot 53.7%-41.6% and permitting Bellevue to finish 36-for-42 at the line. Behind seven boards by Logan Alexander (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Physical Education), the Statesmen held a 40-37 edge in rebounding, including a 21-11 mark on the offensive glass (20-16 in second-chance points).

Both sides did well to possess the ball as William Penn committed only seven turnovers (nine for BU).

“The guys played hard tonight,” Head Coach John Henry said. “We just had a hard time getting it going. It is also hard to beat a team like Bellevue when they get 42 free-throw attempts.”

Next Up: William Penn is off until after the Christmas break, returning to action on January 7 by traveling to Des Moines to face Grand View in its Midwest Collegiate Conference opener. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
