Fairfield got the best of the Oskaloosa girls in their season opener at home on Monday.

A new season brings new hope for the Osky Indian girls basketball team. The girls welcomed the Fairfield Trojans to town in Osky’s season opener on Monday.

Osky came out with good energy but quickly found themselves in a hole behind the hot shooting Fairfield team, especially from behind the 3 point arch. The Indians trailed the Trojans 19-2 at the end of the first quarter. Sloppy ball handling led to numerous turnovers, as Senior Asia Laudermilch had Osky’s only bucket of the quarter.

Osky began the second quarter still having trouble with the Fairfield press, which led to ball stealing and easy baskets for the Trojans. A steal and break away lay in by Senior Taylor Richardson got a little momentum going for the lady Indians. A short jumper by Richarson and a 3 point bomb by Junior Paige Howard tried to keep the Indians in it, but Fairfield continued to have the answer from long distance. The quarter ended on the upside, as Richarson hit a long 3 pt. shot and Osky went into the locker room trailing 39-14.

Osky came out in the second half and found the going a little better. With Richardson finding her range and Sophomore Alexis Westercamp coming to life, the Indian’s offense came to life as well. Osky fought and clawed, but came away with a 60-40 loss.

Osky was led by Richardson with 21 pts. , Westercamp with 10 pts. And 12 rebs. , Howard with 5 pts. And 2 steals, and Laudermilch with 4 pts. and 12 rebs. Oskaloosa is 0-1 and will be in action this Friday night against Knoxville.
