Statesmen Face Off Against NAIA’s Best in Michigan

Grand Rapids, Mich.–In their final warm-up before the league championships, William Penn harrier squads competed against gigantic fields at the Great Lakes Challenge Saturday.

The WPU men were 23rd out of 35 competing teams with 650 points, while the women were just shy of filling a team. Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) took the men’s crown (77 points) and Shawnee State (Ohio) was the women’s champion (122). A number of ranked teams battled in each race.

Mizael Carrera of Robert Morris (Ill.) was the top male racer in 25:02.68, while Alex Berends of Taylor (Ind.) won the women’s competition in 17:56.66.

Ochaung Akway (Sr., St. Paul, Minn., Physical Education) was the only runner in the top 100 in the 375-person men’s 8K field. He finished 54th with a time of 27:08.35.

Saromo Mugisha (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Business Management) was next in 166th at 28:41.57, while Yonas Desta (So., Salt Lake City, Utah, Biology) was only a few seconds behind him at 28:50.39 (175th).

Brenice Ndayizeye (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Computer Science) placed 212th (29:24.43) and Nick Thomas (Sr., Salmon, Idaho, Physical Education) was 266th (30:27.53) to wrap up the varsity’s scoring.

Garrett Heckman (Fr., New Virginia, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) topped the also-ran crew in 296th (31:07.93), while Zach Johnson (Fr., Decatur, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) (304th, 31:17.96), Tyler Connelly (Fr., Trenton, Texas, Software Engineering) (326th, 32:07.39), and Carlos Lizama (So., Victorville, Calif., Physical Education) (359th, 34:35.49) competed as well.

Deja Lewis (So., Spring, Texas, Psychology) guided the Statesmen women in the 5K race, finishing 177th out of 367 individuals in a time of 21:27.31.

Addison Kepner (Jr., Cincinnati, Iowa, Biology) was 208th in 21:51.98 and Guadalupe Gonzalez (Fr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) was 259th in 22:49.24. Elizabeth Boyd (So., Windsor Heights, Iowa, Business Management) crossed the line in a time of 27:07.02 for 354th place.

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to La Crosse, Wis. on November 8 to compete for the league title at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
