Statesmen Tabbed for Silver

Oskaloosa–Despite graduating a good deal of talent, the William Penn men’s bowling team is still figured to be a major player as the Midwest Collegiate Conference coaches’ poll was released today.

The defending conference champion Statesmen are picked to place second in the seven-team league with 42 points and one first-place vote.

St. Ambrose took the top spot with 46 points and five first-place votes, while Clarke is third with 31 points and the final first-place nod.

Grand View (24), AIB (12), and Viterbo (11 round out the poll.

William Penn continues its season on November 8-9 by traveling to Davenport and Moline, Ill. to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.

Coaches Place WPU Fifth in Preseason Rating

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s bowling team is picked for the middle of the pack as the Midwest Collegiate Conference coaches’ poll was released today.

The Statesmen earned 24 points to be positioned fifth among the MCC’s seven teams. Defending champion Grand View is chosen to lead the way with 48 points and six first-place votes.

Mount Mercy is a distant second with 35 points, while Clarke has the final first-place vote to sit in third with 34 points.

St. Ambrose is fourth in the standings with 29 points, while Viterbo (16) and AIB (10) round out the poll.

William Penn continues its season on November 8-9 by traveling to Davenport and Moline, Ill. to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.

Statesmen Lose in OT for First Time

Pella–The Battle of I-163 went to the home team Tuesday as the William Penn men’s soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime to Central in non-conference play.

The old rivalry witnessed the Dutch (5-10) holding a 19-16 edge in shots over the Statesmen (7-7-2). It was the third-straight overtime contest for WPU, which fell in extra time for the first time in six tries (3-1-2).

Following a scoreless opening stanza, Sergio Carro (Jr., London, England, Communications) got the visitors on the board first by finishing off a pass from Luiz Teles (So., Picarres, Brazil, Undecided) at the 50:45 mark. It is the first career goal for Carro and the first career assist for Teles.

Unfortunately with time running out, Central knotted the matchup in the 86th minute to force overtime. The first OT was scoreless, but the Dutch ended the duel with the game-winner 5:03 into the fourth overall period.

Randolph Tamba (So., Firestone, Liberia, Information Technology) guided the offense with five shots, while Pedro Pereira (So., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Communications) posted a career high with nine saves.

Next Up: William Penn returns home Saturday to host Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Mount Mercy in its season finale at 7 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Day.

WPU Swept by #9 Viterbo

La Crosse, Wis.–The host squad showed why it is one of the best in the nation as the Statesmen volleyball team was swept 3-0 by #9 Viterbo in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Tuesday.

William Penn (2-21, 0-4 MCC) lost by scores of 16-25, 9-25, 12-25 to the V-Hawks (29-4, 4-0 MCC). The visitors were limited to a -.035 hitting clip, while Viterbo hit .271 in the match.

Kayce Skocko (Sr., Watsonville, Calif., Business Management) tallied six kills and Kylie Giger (Jr., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) had five, while Leyra Jusino (Jr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) assisted on 11 winners.

Skocko managed the team’s lone ace, while Danielle Breeher (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) came up with 14 digs.

Ana Gutch (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Secondary Education), with one solo and two assists, and Shawni Wills (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology), with three assists, were each part of three blocks.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Grand Rapids, Mich. this weekend to compete in the Aquinas/Cornerstone Tournament. On Friday, the Statesmen meet Siena Heights (Mich.) at 5 p.m. and Lawrence Tech (Mich.) at 8 p.m., while Saturday’s matches against Aquinas and Cornerstone are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Match times are Eastern.
