PELLA — Three Central College athletes were named Iowa Conference player of the week in their respective sports Monday.

Central free safety Jacob Edleman (senior, Mechanicsville, North Cedar HS) was named the football defensive player of the week, soccer forward Aleksander Glavas (senior, Loves Park, Ill., Guilford HS) was named men’s soccer offensive player of the week and Eli Horton (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was named men’s cross country runner of the week.

Edleman comes up big on the football field—Edleman was a game-changer for Central Saturday, picking off three Loras passes in a 41-14 victory for the Dutch. He has four interceptions on the season and 13 for his career, which ranks fifth on the all-time Central list. Edleman also recorded five total tackles in the Central win. This is the first time he has been named conference defensive player of the week.

The Dutch (4-2 overall, 2-1 Iowa Conference) will travel to Cedar Rapids on Saturday to take on Coe College (3-3, 2-1) at 1 p.m.

Glavas scores twice for men’s soccer team—Glavas scored both goals for the Central men’s soccer team in its 2-0 victory over Buena Vista Saturday. He floated a shot over the Buena Vista keeper to give Central the lead in the 60th minute and then found the back of the net again seven minutes later for his second goal of the match and third of the season. This is the second time in his career and first time this season Glavas has earned conference offensive player of the week.

The Dutch (4-10, 2-3) will host Luther (12-2-1, 3-2) Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Horton paces men’s cross country team—Horton placed fourth overall at the 27-team Jim Drews Invitational in Ettrick, Wis. Saturday. He was the top finisher for the Dutch, completing the 8,000-meter course in a season-best 24:40. Horton led No. 8 Central to a third place-finish among Division III schools and fifth-place finish overall. He has finished in the top 10 in all four races this season. This is the seventh time Horton has been named conference cross country runner of the week in his career.

Central will run next at the Iowa Conference Championships Nov. 1 in Indianola. The Dutch will be seeking their third consecutive conference championship.
