Oskaloosa–The league’s head men gave a lot of respect to the William Penn men’s basketball team, but also offered up plenty to last year’s regular season champion as the Midwest Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released today.

William Penn was 24-10 (9-3 MCC) last year, winning the MCC Tournament crown and advancing to the NAIA Division II National Championship Quarterfinals. Unfortunately, that was not enough to lift the navy and gold to the top spot in the preseason coaches’ rating.

St. Ambrose, last year’s regular season winner, nipped WPU by one point at 46-45 and took one more first-place vote (4-3).

Grand View is well back in third with 33 points, while Clarke (22), Viterbo (21), and Mount Mercy (19) are closely packed together in the middle. AIB rounds out the poll with ten points.

William Penn opens its season next Friday by traveling to Sioux City to face Morningside in non-conference action at 7:30 p.m.
