Fifth Place Expected of William Penn Women

Oskaloosa–In a deep league race, the Statesmen women’s basketball team is slated to finish fifth as the Midwest Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released today.

William Penn (12-18, 3-9 MCC) picked up 26 points to take the fifth spot in the seven-team league.

The MCC’s coaches have put St. Ambrose back at the top after winning the 2013-2014 regular season and tournament crowns. SAU took 48 points and six first-place votes.

Mount Mercy claimed the final first-place vote and is a distant second with 37 points. Clarke is close behind in third with 34 points, while Grand View (29) and William Penn (26) are also in the mix.

Viterbo, with 12 points, and AIB, with ten points, round out the preseason rating.

William Penn opens its season next Wednesday at home against Waldorf in in non-conference action at 6 p.m.

Statesmen Down to #11

Oskaloosa–Having its four-game winning streak snapped pushed the William Penn football team down the national ladder as the NAIA’s fifth top-25 poll was released Monday.

The Statesmen (5-2, 1-0 MWL), who lost to then-#21 Marian (Ind.) last Saturday, fell five slots to #11 with 186 points.

Morningside remains #1 with 314 points and 13 first-place votes, while Baker (Kan.) is still second with the final first-place vote. Carroll (Mont.), Grand View, and Faulkner (Ala.) round out the top five.

The Midwest League is also represented by #9 Saint Xavier (Ill.), William Penn’s opponent this Saturday in Oskaloosa (noon start).
