WPU Falls in Four Sets to St. Ambrose

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen volleyball team produced one of its more inspired outings this fall, but unfortunately it was not enough in a 3-1 loss to St. Ambrose in Midwest Collegiate Conference play Tuesday.

William Penn (2-20, 0-3 MCC) lost by scores of 26-24, 14-25, 21-25, 22-25. The hosts were outhit .200-.066.

The opening set was a see-saw battle with WPU pulling out to an early advantage, but then trailing the Fighting Bees 18-14. The Statesmen did not flinch, though, bouncing back with six of the next seven points. SAU (14-14, 2-2 MCC) recaptured the advantage at 21-20 and again at 22-21, but WPU came up with three straight and eventually pulled it out.

William Penn hit .206 in the opening go-round, but quickly fell off the pace with a -.054 mark in a difficult second set.

The third and fourth sets witnessed the Statesmen holding late leads, but failing to close them out in remaining winless in league action.

Kayce Skocko (Sr., Watsonville, Calif., Business Management) had a solid showing with a team-best 13 kills and a .212 hitting clip. Kylie Giger (Jr., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) also reached double figures with 12 kills. The junior had a double-double, adding 12 digs to her kill tally.

Ana Gutch (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Secondary Education) and Shawni Wills (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) also managed six winners apiece.

Leyra Jusino (Jr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) posted a double-double with 37 assists and 11 digs in addition to three aces, while Danielle Breeher (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) dug 19 SAU attempts. Erika Getz (Jr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) finished with four blocks (two solos, two assists).

“We showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm tonight,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said. “We came out well, but struggled to keep the momentum in the second set. We kept battling in the final two sets, going after every ball. I am proud of our ladies for their efforts in giving St. Ambrose a great fight.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to La Crosse, Wis. next Tuesday to face #7 Viterbo in MCC play at 7:30 p.m.
