ANNUAL CEMETERY WALK TO TAKE PLACE AT FOREST CEMETERY

Oskaloosa, IA – The Oskaloosa Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board invites the public to their Annual Cemetery Walk at Forest Cemetery. The walk will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5 and begin just inside the North 9th Street entrance.

A yearly tradition, the Cemetery Walk offers a tour through Forest Cemetery and Oskaloosa’s past, guided by members of the Teen Advisory Board. Teens will present a snapshot of the lives of Oskaloosa residents who are interred in the cemetery.

This year’s Cemetery Walk will coincide with the community wide reading project, Mahaska Reads. Twelve Years a Slave, this year’s selected title, takes place during the pre-Civil War time period when slavery still existed in the United States. Members of the Library’s Teen Advisory Board will present residents of Oskaloosa and Mahaska County who lived and died during that time period.

Residents to be featured in the presentation include member of the 47th Iowa Infantry, Marquis Barr; senior member of the firm of Hawkins Brothers, William H. Hawkins; and one of the oldest residents of Oskaloosa of her time, Mrs. Jacobina Herbig.

The Oskaloosa Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board meets monthly at the library to help make decisions about the Teen Zone space and plan events and programs for teens at the library. For more information, visit the Library’s website at www.oskaloosalibrary.org.
